FAIRFIELD, Conn. A group of five teenagers were charged with theft Saturday in Fairfield. The Bethel and Oakville residents were accused of stealing the towns decorative flags from the fishing pier near South Benson Marina.
The guard at South Benson told Fairfield police he saw five teenagers carrying five American flags while running out of the marina area. The flags apparently were ripped off their footings at the fishing pier at the inlet leading to the marina.
A car containing five teens was stopped nearby, and the flags were found inside, police said. Shawna Dehoff, 18, and Mitch Reynolds, 18, both of Bethel and Brian Manere, 18, of Oakville were inside the car at the time, police said. A 17-year-old youthful offender and a 16-year-old juvenile, both also form Bethel, also were in the vehicle, police said.
All five were charged with sixth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors. All five were released on promises to appear in court. Dehoff, Reynolds and Manere are due in court July 19, and the two minors are scheduled to appear in juvenile court July 12.
