To dance a tango authentically, you have to smolder. Because this sensual dance, created in the brothels of Argentina in the late 19th century, is all about heat. In "Tango Inferno - The Fire Within" at the Palace Theatre Feb. 5 at 8 p.m., The Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires's 10 dazzling dancers, including three world champions, bring plenty of combustion, along with skill, color and mesmerizing talent, to the stage. The evening's authenticity and flavor are enhanced by four virtuoso musicians playing some of the best known Argentinian tango music, including pieces by legendary Argentine tango composer Piazzolla and songs of the country's beloved King of Tango, Carlos Gardel.
According to the website AllAboutTango.com, the dance got its shady start in the outskirts of Buenos Aires during the 1880's. Immigrants, from Europe, Africa and elsewhere, who frequented the city's brothels, devised the tango, contributing rhythms and elements to create the dance. First frowned on by polite society, the tango was later discovered and embraced by an artistocratic poet and playboy, Ricardo Guiraldes, who introduced the dance to Parisian salons, where it became the toast of France and beyond.
