PEEKSKILL, NY The mysterious item detonated Tuesday morning was an electronic item used in online treasure hunts.
The item, which is known commonly as a "geocache," is hidden by someone in order for others to find using GPS coordinates in an elaborate high-tech treasure hunt.
Members of the county bomb squad were called to Water Street this morning to investigate the small PVC pipe found near the entrance of Charles Point Pier Park. The item was detonated by the bomb squad, which is standard procedure, at approximately 11 a.m. and was inspected afterwards, according Peekskill Police spokesman Sergeant Ray Henderlong.
"We took the proper precautions," Henderlong said. "With 9/11 this past weekend you can never be too careful."
