ARMONK, N.Y. The North Castle Police Department reports that there have been multiple sightings of possibly rabid animals in areas across Armonk in the past week. Police say a resident at 4 Wage Ave. twice reported spotting a raccoon in the yard that appeared to be rabid. The first incident occurred around 5 p.m. on May 15. The resident once again reported seeing a "sick raccoon" on May 20 around 10:30 a.m. In both cases, police say, the raccoon was gone when they arrived.
On May 16 around 7:45 p.m. a resident of Creemer Road reported that a dog that appeared to be rabid was running in her backyard. The dog was gone when officers arrived.
Residents are urged to report possible rabid animal sightings to North Castle Police or the Westchester County Health Department immediately.

North Castle Police responded to a damaged mailbox on School St. in Armonk around 9:50 p.m. on May 20. Police say it appears that the mailbox was damaged by an explosive device that may have been placed inside the mailbox. Police report that the mailbox was on the ground next to the post and that most of the mail inside was frayed or damaged. Police say there was a strong smell of gunpowder at the scene and a small plastic casing was found near the mailbox that could have held the device.
Around 7:45 a.m. on May 20 a worker at Smiths Tavern in Armonk reported to police that a lamppost in a nearby parking lot was knocked over and damaged at some point during the overnight hours. Police say it would cost several hundred dollars to replace the post.
