Suspect Charged in Break-in at Fairfield Synagogue

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man was charged with third-degree burglary after a reported break-in at Congregation Ahavath Achim Friday afternoon.

Anthony Costello was seen running out of the Fairfield synagogue with a hammer, according to police reports.

The congregation’s vice president told police a man was seen inside the Stratfield Road synagogue at about 4 p.m. Friday before anyone was supposed to be inside. The witness chased the man, who he believes was carrying a hammer, onto nearby Lillalyn Drive and Church Hill Road, police said.

Fairfield Police officers stopped Costello on Church Hill, and took him back to the scene. He was identified as the man running from the synagogue, police said. Costello was released on a promise to appear in court March 19.
