FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Bridgeport man was charged with conspiracy and assault stemming from a case at Fairfield University in March, 2011. Axel Lee, 20, was arrested after a traffic stop early Friday morning.
In the 2011 incident, a Fairfield University student was punched in the head during a robbery on the schools campus. At the time he was taken to St. Vincents Medical Center for a broken jaw, which later required reconstructive surgery, police say. A silver and gold chain valued at $900 was taken from the man.
Investigators believe that Lee was involved in that attack, along with another Bridgeport man, 20-year-old Sanjae Mendez. Mendez was charged with felony assault, robbery, larceny and conspiracy on July 19, 2011. He has since pleaded not guilty to the charges. His trial is still pending.
About 1 a.m. Friday morning a Fairfield Police officer was parked in a lot on Kings Highway when he saw a car pass at a high speed, according to the police report. The officer stopped the car, which Lee was driving. Mendez was also in the car at the time. Both were arrested when the officer learned of pending warrants for their arrest, police say.
Lee was charged with third-degree assault; conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery; and fifth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. He was held on a $10,000 bond and is due in court July 16. Mendez was charged with a failure to appear in court relating to charges from Bridgeport Police. He was released after posting a $500 bond and is also due in court July 16.
