Support For New Rochelle Nonprofit Grows

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Synergy Westchester has gained significant support since its launch in September, according to the organization's leaders.

“We couldn’t believe it. We had an unbelievable amount of people,” said Andi Stix about the group’s success in such a short period of time. Stix is the director of Synergy, a nonprofit based in New Rochelle that aims to support learning for “gifted and talented” students.

The nonprofit's first challenge, entitled Comic Animator, saw 1,037 Likes from Facebook users from all over the word, Stix said.  For the program, children created a comic book character with superhero powers and submitted an image or video of their superhero with a written description of how the character improved the world.

Submissions for the organization’s next challenge, Game Maker, asks participants to design a game that will challenge and motivate a child, such as board games, tiles, sports, and word play. Synergy’s goal is to reach 2,000 fans by the April 1 deadline.

There are three age categories for participants – elementary, middle and high school. The submissions will be posted on Facebook and Synergy members will vote for their favorite entries. A panel of judges will then choose winners among a group of finalists.

Two winners will be chosen from each category on the basis of relevance, originality of thought, uniqueness of content, creative expression and grammar, the Synergy website said. Winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to The Learning Express, Amazon, iTunes or the chance to donate the prize to their charity of choice.

Stix is the director of Gifted and Talented Enrichment Center (G-tec), which, according to its website, enhances children’s learning through its countywide Synergy program that seeks to build a community for talented and gifted children, along with their families.
