The Liberal Arts and Sciences: Adolescence Education (Teacher Education Transfer) program is designed for students seeking careers teaching grades 7 through 12. According to SUNY Westchester Community College, the program was created in response to demand for qualified educators, including about 411,549 teaching positions nationally that are either unfilled or staffed by teachers who are not fully certified for their assignments.

The program includes concentrations aligned with shortage areas identified by New York State United Teachers for grades 7 through 12: English, History, Mathematics, and Spanish.

Per SUNY Westchester Community College, President Dr. Belinda Miles said, “By introducing this Adolescence Education program, we are addressing a vital workforce need. We are providing aspiring educators with an affordable, high-quality foundation right here in Westchester, ensuring they are fully equipped to step into local classrooms and inspire the next generation of leadership.”

The program is part of the college’s Teacher Education Transfer umbrella.

SUNY WCC already has transfer agreements for its Childhood Education track with CUNY Lehman College, Manhattanville University, Mercy University, Pace University, Sarah Lawrence College, SUNY Binghamton University, and SUNY Empire State University.

The college plans to expand those agreements to include the new Adolescence Education pathway. This includes advanced “2+2+1” options at institutions including Mercy University and Sarah Lawrence College, allowing students to work toward associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in an accelerated format.

The launch makes SUNY WCC one of a select group of regional community colleges offering an associate degree pathway focused on secondary teacher preparation.
