PURCHASE, N.Y. SUNY Purchase opera and vocal studies students are set to perform Cendrillon at the college in two weeks.
Cendrillon, known better by the name Cinderella, is a four-act opera that was first performed in Paris in 1899. According to a press release from the college, the performance will run from March 22 through 25.
Few of us know that the animated story of the glass slipper, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and the Evil Stepmother is derived from a 1698 story by Charles Perrault, the press release reads.
According to the press release, the opera will star senior soprano singer Candice Lynn Matthews and junior Brittany Sokolowski in the title role. Graduate students Christopher Colmero and John K. Park, both tenors, will split the role of Le Prince Charmant (Prince Charming) while seniors Kelly Ann Clark and Jamie Lee Page, both mezzo-sopranos, will perform as Madame de la Haltiere, more commonly known as the Evil Stepmother.
The plot of the opera is very similar to that of Walt Disneys animated classic that is more commonly known. Cendrillon, who is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, is visited by her Fairy Godmother who helps transform her shabby clothes into fancy garments so she can attend the princes ball.
Despite only being around for 12 years, SUNY Purchases Opera Performance and Vocal Studies Department has won eight awards, including Best Opera of the Year from the National Opera Association. The departments chair, Jacque Trussel, was recognized by Classical Singer magazine as the Stage Director of the Year as well.
