Summer's End Cheers Some, Not All

Summer is over, and Christina Hamlin isn't complaining. The end of the warmest months of the year is welcomed by Hamlin, who is used to the cooler temperatures of London, where she lived prior to coming to New Canaan about a year ago.

"The summer was fun, but I'm looking forward to a change in season," she said while spending Friday afternoon at Mead Park with sons Noah, 4, and Ben, 3. "The boys will be back in school in a week's time."

Many others in town are happy to see the summer come to an end, thankful that heat and humidity will be replaced by falling leaves and cooler temperatures. Ben and Noah said they like fall because of the opportunity to see falling leaves.

Sun worshippers, however, are lamenting the transition. For Gina Cleary, it means no more trips to Waveny Park. "I'm sad it's over. Now we have to get back to the hustle and bustle of school," said Cleary, a mother of four. Only her son, Timmy, 3, gets to enjoy a day out with mom now that the calendar has turned.

For Hill Cheuk, 35, Labor Day weekend is bittersweet. He spent Friday on the baseball diamond at Mead Park with his twin boys, Xander and Zack. Over the summer, he and his family traveled to Washington, D.C., and Rhode Island. Now it's time for him to put away the shorts and T-shirts and prepare for boots and wool hats. He also will not like having less daylight when standard time resumes next month. "I just think that when summer's over, winter is coming," he said.
