Summer Theatre Updates Henry IV

William Shakespeare’s body of work contains many memorable characters. There’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Romeo and Juliet, Lady MacBeth, and … Jack Bauer?

Not exactly, but the Summer Theatre of New Canaan is using the Fox show “24” as a creative inspiration for its performances of the bard’s “Henry IV,” which will run June 12 to July 3. Ten of the group’s mix of professional and amateur actors will stage their adaptation, dubbed “H4,” in their 200-seat open-air tent theater in Waveny Park.

“H4” takes the original characters and plot of “Henry IV” and updates it for a modern setting. “The writing, plots and characters are just as fresh today as when they were written,” said Melody Libonati, artistic director. “If you like Fox TV's hit series "24," you’ll want to see our adaptation.”

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan is now in its seventh season, and has previously tackled Shakespeare’s work with performances of “The Taming of the Shrew,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Twelfth Night” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” as well as “A Muse in Love,” an original work that adapted many of the bard’s plays.

Performances are Wednesday through Sunday nights between June 12 and July 3, starting at 8 p.m., in Waveny Park. During the run of “H4,” they’ll also put on “Shakespeare for Kids,” a one-hour interactive adaptation of “H4” for a younger audience, each afternoon at 2 p.m.  All shows are free.
