Sullivan County DA Brian Conaty had just arrived at his office in Monticello shortly after 5 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, when a man approached him in the parking lot and urgently asked for help, the DA's Office announced on Friday, Sept. 4.
The man told Conaty that his friend had taken illegal drugs and was unresponsive, and asked whether the office had Narcan available.
Conaty immediately went inside and retrieved Narcan from the office's emergency supply kit before accompanying the man to the property of the former Sullivan County Jail, according to the DA's Office.
There, they found the person unresponsive. While Conaty stayed on the phone with Monticello Police to summon emergency help, Narcan was administered to the person.
Police and emergency responders arrived and continued providing care, and the person was successfully revived, the DA's Office said.
Remarkably, the incident came just days after Conaty attended a vigil remembering local residents who have died from overdoses, according to officials.
The DA's Office said it keeps Narcan readily available and trains staff members to administer it.
Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
