BEDFORD, NY-- Almost a dozen high school students took to the streets of Bedford Saturday and raised nearly $2,000 to help the Bedford Hills Free Library make up for budget cuts.
The library is currently facing a ten percent funding cut, which leaves them short about $90,000 that is needed to maintain its current programs.
Teo Viola organized the event, recruiting fellow classmates to help in the fundraising effort.
"We all thought it was a good idea. It's good to help the community," said Ryan Luparello, a freshman at Fox Lane High School.
Also dedicating time Saturday was Viola, Connor Mullen, Natasha Cohen, Colleen Green, Sophie Silverman, Sarah Cohen, Gabrielle Morreale, Stephanie Hon, Clare Jeffers, Casey Crowell, Stephanie Viola and Lindsey Ruzza.
Most of the students felt a personal connection to the library and wanted to help it.
"I love the library, I've been coming here for years," said Hon a junior at Fox Lane High School.
The group collected donations at Depot Plaza, the intersection of Route 117 and Main Street and Shop Rite from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"Most people are giving us money. We try and make them laugh," said Mullen, a Fox Lane freshman, while he was out collecting money.
