Students at Newfield Elementary practice generosity and civic mindedness throughout the year, not just at Thanksgiving. We have tried for many years to instill in our children the importance of giving back to the community, said Assistant Principal Dr. Connie Stevenson. At Newfield, the Student Council takes the lead with various events and activities.
Just last week, the Council completed a food drive that sent 32 boxes of non-perishable items to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in Stamford.
Student Council Vice President Lucas Breault, a fifth-grader, said, All the food came from the kids homes and was brought in over about two weeks.
Student Council President Molly Murray, also a fifth-grader, won a schoolwide election to lead the Council this year. Every class selects two representatives and then you can run for an officer position.
The Council meets once a month under Stevensons guidance to talk about ideas for events to help local charities. Our goal is to keep this benefit in Stamford, says Stevenson.
Other successful student projects were a Clothing and Necessities drive for Haiti relief that was run through Stamfords Americares and a Cupcake Fundraiser for Stamford Hospice in which parents donated cupcakes and the kids sold them at school, raising $2,000.
Its refreshing to see children at a young age learning the importance of giving to the community in which they live. Tell us what you think by adding a comment to this story.
