Students Emphasize Test Stress with ATF President

Standardized testing can be a very stressful time for students and the pressure begins as early as elementary school, students said during a discussion at White Plains High School with American Teacher Federation President Randi Weingarten.

Weingarten’s “Make Every Day Count Tour” brought her to the high school and Highlands Middle School May 9. High school students used the meeting with the head of the teacher’s union to emphasize how much time is spent preparing for standardized testing.

Some students remember being introduced to standardized tests as early as second grade.

“We don’t want to feel like we’re in panic mode for 180 days,” said senior Rachel Grafman, according to a White Plains School District Press release. “Testing is just one part of the educational experience.”

Weingarten acknowledged the importance dialogue between teachers and students.

“I learned so much from what my students told me,” said Weingarten, according to a White Plains School District press release. “I hope there’s still time for those conversations in today’s high schools.”

Weingarten was joined by New York State United Teachers President and ATF Vice President Dick Iannuzzi as well as White Plains Teachers Association President Kerry Broderick. The trio toured classrooms and attended a lunch with local educators and leaders at the Staff Development Center.
