Hannah Herde and Cody Newton have a lot to be proud of. Superintendant David Abbey listed just a few of the New Canaan High School seniors achievements before honoring them with the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Award Monday night. To be sure, their resumes are impressive.
Hannah puts her heart and soul into everything that she does, Abbey said. One of the reasons she received the award was her rigorous academic schedule, taking every AP and honors class recommended to her, and still maintaining a high grade point average. Her main passion is science, which she has put into practice for the past three years at the Mariitime Aquarium in Norwalk, as a volunteer, and intern, and now as a member of its Youth Board.
At NCHS, Hannah is president of the Student Coalition, the schools student government, and is also the leader of the French Club. As her counselor offered, the world needs more Hannahs, Abbey said.
The other winner, Cody, is being honored for his accomplishments in the classroom in a addition to his accolades on the playing field, Abbey said. Cody is captain of both the Rams state champion football team and its equally talented lacrosse team, winning all-league honors in both sports and making the all-state team in lacrosse.
Off the field, Cody is a driving force of the Future Business Leaders Program, eyeing a future career in business. He also served as a student leader in Names Can Hurt, an anti-bullying program aimed at underclassmen. He worked with the Service League of Boys for four years, and is a counselor at a sports program for those with developmental disabilities. The work ethic Cody brings to the athletic fields, to the classrooms, and to all his commitments will guarantee his success and enrich the lives of those around him, Abbey said, quoting Codys counselor.
The district gives the award each year to students with a willingness to take challenges, capacity to make difficult decisions, concern for others, ability to work with others, willingness to commit to a project, diplomacy, and ability to honor a commitment, Abbey said in his introduction. I guess a shorthanded way of saying character.
