A quick-moving thunderstorm kept Westport firefighters busy Wednesday night.
From 8:30 to 10 p.m., the fire department responded to numerous storm-related calls, three of which regarded lightning strikes.
Lightning struck a home on Bushy Ridge, damaging interior sheetrock and exterior siding, Assistant Chief Larry Conklin said in a statement. Firefighters cut away the siding to check for signs of the blaze spreading; no signs of fire were found.
A home on Warnock Drive was also struck by lightning, causing a fire in an interior wall. To extinguish the blaze, firefighters had to cut through the sheet rock.
A tree in the front yard of a Country Road home was struck by lightning. The electrical current from the lightning flowed into the garage and caused the control panel to the lawn irrigation system to blow up.
Because of the high call volume, the Fairfield Fire Department sent a truck to cover the Westport Fire Headquarters.
On Thursday morning, Connecticut Light & Power reported 22 customers without power in Westport. Schools in Greenwich were delayed one hour by power outages in that town.
