Who wants to stay inside in this beautiful summer weather? Even New Canaan business owners feel the need to step out and enjoy the fresh air. The annual Sidewalk Sale and Village Fair returns to the Town Center July 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shops along Main Street, Elm Street and Forest Avenue take to the streets, ready for bargain-hunters to take advantage of their deals.
But, as Chamber of Commerce president Tucker Murphy says in a press release, New Canaans sidewalk sale day has morphed into more than just rack-lined streets and balloons to garner attention. The Clam Diggers Dixie Land Band, musician and entertainer Bruce Hazard and magic from The Great Sirico entertain crowds throughout the day. For the kids, theres the Farm on Wheels petting zoo, face-painting, and Old Faithful, the Fire Departments classic engine.
And dont forget about the food. The corner of Elm and South Avenue will transform into an al fresco food court, featuring specials from local restaurants. And since its sure to be a hot day, ice cream trucks will be stationed around the fair as well.
This years fair looks out for walking traffic. While portions of Elm Street, South Avenue and Forest Avenue will be closed as always, this year the Chamber got approval to close down Main Street between Elm and East Avenue as well. In the past, that area has been very, very, very congested, Murphy said. This will open it up and create a better flow. And, it will be a lot safer for people to walk through.
