This summer readers dont have to head to the beach to hit the water. The Ferguson Library and its branches are offering summer reading programs for children and teens that have a watery theme.
The program kicks off on June 28. You can get information on signing up here.
Summer reading is an essential activity for many reasons, but most important is the fact that studies have proven that kids who read over the summer return to school without loosing any gain in reading proficiency said Caroline Ward, coordinator of youth services for the library, in response to an email. It is sometimes referred to as the summer slide.
Teens can Make Waves @ the Library, which launches on June 29. Not only will they read and win prizes, they can volunteer to help out with the younger kids program.
Adults might not be hitting the water, but Adventures in Reading offers the chance to win prizes and the opportunity to meet authors. At the program's opening event last night, the mystery author Rosemary Harris, who has a home in Fairfield County, appeared with Katherine Weber, author of True Confections.
