Stark Students Sing Vets' Praises

In a rousing display of their musical talents, the third-graders at Stark Elementary School paid a heartfelt thanks to veterans at Stark's annual "Tribute to Veterans."

"All of you are our heroes," third-grade student Sienna Grissom of Mrs. Tobitsch's class said to the dozen veterans and some 300 parents and friends assembled Wednesday morning.

After a welcome and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance from Principal William Johnson, the third-grade students belted out patriotic songs and tributes to all veterans who have served their country.

During a robust rendition of "We the People," third-grader Henry LaGreca and fellow students read off each state name while the state seal was simultaneously projected on a large screen.

Accompanied by the school band, the students sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the theme song of each of the different branches of the armed forces. As each branch's theme song was sung, veterans from that branch stood and were recognized.

Vietnam vet Bill McAlarney was doubly proud as he watched his daughter McKenzie sing along with her third- grade classmates.

"I've come to this event for many years and really love what the kids do for us," said Air Force vet Dom Sarcia, who served with the 351st squadron in WWII. "Clark Gable was in our squadron and was a great guy," added Sarcia.

One of the proudest visitors was former Stark Principal Dr. Mary Savage, who started the Tribute to Veterans celebration during her 17-year tenure as the head of the school.

"We always tried to instill in all our students an appreciation for the sacrifices that so many have given over the years."
