Staples' boys soccer team suspected it might have difficulty finding the right emotional energy against St. Joseph following intense victories over Brookfield and Greenwich,
The Wreckers won, 1-0, on a penalty kick by Greg Gudis in the second half. The Wreckers (11-2-1) are now unbeaten in 11 straight games. It finishes the regular season next week with games against Ridgefield on Monday and Bassick on Wednesday.
Gudis' goal came after Mikey Scott was dragged down in the penalty box. The defense contained the Cadets (4-6-3) and held them without a shot until a blast in the final minute whizzed over the crossbar. Staples, which posted its seventh shutout of the season, was helped by the return of Steven Denowitz to the back line. He missed nine games with a knee injury.
Staples is currently seeded second in the FCIAC standings behind Norwalk. The Wreckers and Greenwich each have 31 points. Staples has the tiebreaker advantage after beating Greenwich on Tuesday.
