WESTPORT, Conn. Staples junior Henry Wynne finished third overall and Caroline Koenig was 25th in the girls race to lead performances by the Wreckers at Tuesdays State Open cross country meet at Hammonasset State Park in Madison.
Wynne, who won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship, finished third in 15:50 on the 5-kilometer (3.1 mile course). Fairfield Preps Connor Rog won in 15:22, followed by Fairfield Wardes Harry Warnick in 15:35.
Staples finished eighth as a team with 214 points. Mikolaj Kulis finished 16th overall in 16:18. Other scorers for Staples included Marcus Russi (74th, 17:07), Patrick Nolan (104th, 17:28) and Brad Payne (122nd, 17:39).
Koenig, a sophomore, ran 19:33. She was the only Staples girl in the race.
Wynne, Kulis and Koenig advance to Saturdays New England championships in Smithfield, R.I. The top six teams and top 25 runners advanced to the New England race. Complete results are available on www.casciac.org.
