Staples Rocks Unbeaten Brookfield

After Staples' soccer team started the season with consecutive losses, it was reasonable to wonder whether it would be a factor in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The perennially powerful Wreckers have since proven they are still a league force.

Staples (9-2-1) bounced undefeated Brookfield on Saturday, 5-1, on goals by Mikey Scott, Lorenz Esposito, Jake Krosse, Steve Smith and Alex Tonsberg. Staples scored three goals in the first 12 minutes.

"Since our slow start, we've worked hard on defending and attacking as a group. We've concentrated on set pieces, both offensively and defensively,'' coach Dan Woog said. "Most important, though, has been the recognition by all our players that they needed to embrace the traditional 'Staples soccer' philosophy and ideals. They've done that very, very well. My hat is off to them."

After its non-league win over Brookfield, the Wreckers return to the FCIAC wars Tuesday in pivotal contest against Greenwich. The Cards (8-1-1) and Staples are tied for second in the battle for No. 2 seed in the league playoffs. Both are chasing No. 1 seed Norwalk (10-2). Game time is 4 p.m. at Staples.

"It should also be an excellent game,'' Woog said. "They are always very well coached, very strong on and off the ball, and very tough to figure out. We're tied for second place in the FCIAC, and both of us still hold out hopes of catching Norwalk. This match is important in the standings -- and also in getting ready for the tough post-season ahead."
