WESTPORT, Conn. Two mathematics teachers at Westports Staples High School were recently named Gold Star Teachers by W!SE, a New York-based educational nonprofit organization that promotes financial literacy in schools across the country, the schools superintendents office announced Thursday.
Lenny Klein and Sarah White, who teach personal financial management, are among almost 300 educators who were named Gold Star Teachers for the 2011-12 academic year.
The accolade is given to teachers who achieve a 90 percent passing rate in their classes on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test. All of the students enrolled in Kleins and Whites personal financial management classes last spring passed the test and received their financial-literacy certification, the news release from the superintendents office said.
The semester-long course, now in its third year at Staples, is designed to help students develop an understanding of financial-literacy concepts. It also prepares students to manage money and make informed financial decisions in their own lives.
Because the students in the course earned an average score of 80 percent or higher on the financial-literacy certification test, Staples was named a 2011-12 Blue Star School. It is the only school in the state on the list.
Klein and White will be honored at a Nov. 6 conference in New York City.
