Staples' boys basketball team has lost twice to Ridgefield this season, by a total of five points. The Wreckers will get another crack at the Tigers Wednesday in the second round of the Class LL tournament.
Staples advanced Monday night with a 52-37 win over Amity. Luke Yeager scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the 12th-seeded Wreckers (16-6). Zach Campbell scored 12 for No. 21 Amity.
Staples put the game away with a 12-1 surge in the second quarter. Mike Argosh added 15 for Staples, while Gabe Seidman scored eight.
Staples has won 11 of its last 13 games. The Wreckers lost to eventual champion Bassick in the quarterfinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. Its only other loss since Jan. 14 is a Feb. 14 setback to St. Joseph, which earned the top seed for the FCIAC playoffs.
Staples lost to Ridgefield 66-63 on Dec. 15 and again on Dec. 29, 51-49. Ridgefield, seeded No. 5, advanced with a 66-46 win over Simsbury on Monday.
