Raising money for the Staples High School Fall Sports Program is a noble cause in Westport. But when Matthew Deedon of Waterbury raised money for the program, it allegedly was going into his own pocket.
Using the Staples Sports Program as a ruse, Deedon, 45, collected donations from Westport businesses on three separate occasions last year, police reported. A complaint of a suspicious person attempting to raise money in November led police to Deedon.
During the investigation, police discovered that a total of 25 businesses gave Deedon money. Police contacted the Staples Sports Program and learned that Deedon was not authorized to solicit funds.
While appearing in Norwalk Superior Court on other charges on Dec. 6, Deedon was picked up by Westport detectives. He was charged with 25 counts of sixth-degree larceny. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 20.

A Westport police officer found three crack pipes during a traffic stop on I-95 near exit 19 on Jan. 5. The officer stopped Bridgeport residents Steve Jordans, 46, and Justo Dominguez, 34, after running the car's registration and learning it was suspended. While stopping the car, the officer reportedly saw a white package being thrown out of the window.
This package, later secured by police, was found to be a crack pipe and a package of cocaine wrapped in a napkin. A search of the car turned up another crack pipe and a Stop & Shop bag filled with several cans of baby formula and a pack of diapers. Inside the trunk, officers found another Stop & Shop bag filled with about 65 packs of gum and a third crack pipe.
Both Jordans and Dominquez were charged with possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence and sixth-degree larceny. Jordans was additionally charged with several motor vehicle violations. Both men were scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
