Staples opens state tournament play Tuesday as the No. 2 seed in the Class LL baseball tournament. The Wreckers, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference postseason champions, open at home with a 3:30 p.m. game against Hamden.
Staples (18-3) lost in the first round of the FCIAC tournament to Westhill, ending a two-year reign atop the league. Staples did get good news later in the week when Jack Hennessy was named the FCIAC's Player of the Year. Pitcher David Speer and catcher Grant Moss were also named first team All-FCIAC selections. In all, 12 Staples players earned FCIAC honors. The winner of today's game meets the Fairfield Prep vs. Manchester victor on Wednesday.
In softball, Staples is seeded No. 22 and travels to No. 11 Fairfield Ludlowe in a first round game Tuesday at 4 p.m. The winner will play Glastonbury Wednesday.
In girls tennis, Staples meets Westhill at 12:30. If the Wreckers win, they will play the Hall-Ridgefield winner at 3 p.m.
