Standoff Ends With a Bang and a Bust

Police arrested former Weston school bus driver Scott DeiCas, 48, at his home at 295 Ponus Ridge in New Canaan after a 10-hour standoff that ended with a bang--literally. According to published reports, Weston Police issued an arrest warrant for DeiCas due to threatening statements against the Weston town government posted on YouTube and phone calls made to his former employers.

New Canaan Police arrived at DeiCas’ home on Friday at approximately 10:30 p.m., but the suspect refused to leave the building. After 10 hours of attempts to get DeiCas out of his home peacefully, at 8:30 Saturday morning a SWAT team on the scene set off a flashbang,or noise-making explosive, and Greenwich’s K-9 unit entered the house. (Part of the delay in the standoff resulted from the wait for a K-9 unit to respond, since New Canaan's recently approved unit is not fully trained.) DeiCas surrendered himself shortly thereafter, and police took him to Weston for booking.

DeiCas worked as a bus driver in Weston for two years, until the Board of Education reassigned him in 2009 because of parental complaints. In videos and comments posted on YouTube, under the names “ScottNastyDeiCas” and “ihitawallof(expletive),” DeiCais admitted to heavy LSD use and posted comments with specific threats against the Weston town government. He also is accused of leaving a threatening voicemail message on the Weston Board of Education answering machine. According to published reports, DeiCas demanded to speak to a certain employee, adding “She had better (expletive) call me or she is (expletive) dead."

Weston Police charged DeiCas with second-degree harassment and third-degree computer crimes. He is now in their custody and will appear in court in Norwalk on Monday.
