Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst is how Stamford prepares for weather changes as frigid winter slides into spring. With the warmer weather comes melting ice and snow, which could lead to flooding.
With the heavy snowfall and lingering snow and ice mounds this winter, compounded by recent rain, We anticipate a lot of flooding, said Fire Capt. Brain Fontneau. We watch the weather every day. More rain is predicted this week, so emergency crews are particularly vigilant, he said. We anticipate and prepare for it. We try not to be surprised.
Areas in Stamford most susceptible to flooding "are probably the neighborhoods near Long Island Sound, Fontneau said. Homeowners with basements also should pay special attention, he said. Basements need to be pumped out.
There also are other hazards. A blocked sewage line in the Shippan area had fire department crews on the scene from late Monday through much of Tuesday. Those systems get overtaxed with the heavy rain, Fontneau said.
Expect more rain this week. Theres a 50 percent chance of precipitation Wednesday and a 90 percent chance Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service. New rainfall accumulation could be 1 to 2 inches Thursday night. Temperatures will rise during the week, with an expected high of about 42 degrees Wednesday, 45 on Thursday and 49 on Friday.
