STAMFORD, Conn. -- Marium Moin and her friends were thrilled to meet Lee DeWyze at an Alive-at-Five concert last week. The singer-songwriter was the "American Idol" winner during the show's ninth season. Since then, the musician has released two albums and has toured extensively. He posed for photos, signed autographs and chatted with his fans.
More on the Stamford entertainment scene: Sgt. Chris Weed and Officer Hugh Mullin were both enjoying being on duty when Grammy award-winning composer/pianist John Tesh performed during the first "Jazz Up July," a Wednesday night summer concert series in Columbus Park. The concerts are free and performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Tesh, a syndicated radio personality whose show, Intelligence for Your Life, can be heard on local station WEBE 108, has over 14.2 million listeners worldwide. Sally and Bob Budke were enjoying the ambiance of the evening: "We just like to come down for concerts. We really enjoy downtown Stamford!" For Sue Alswanger, Donna Carboni, Kate Herman and Carolyn Richardson, it was a "girls night out" and a way, according to Herman, of being outside with friends and connecting with the community."
Bobby Valentine was excited that Alive-at-Five was bringing MC Hammer in for a performance. While greeting customers at his namesake Main Street restaurant, he related his connection to the rapper. The entrepreneurial young Hammer, then called Stanley Burrell, was discovered by Oakland As owner Charlie Findlay while selling balls and entertaining crowds in the stadium parking lot. Findley started the 11-year-old as a batboy and gradually entrusted him with more responsibilities in the clubhouse.
