Stamford Neighbors Notes

STAMFORD, Conn. ? The arts are alive throughout October. Stamford’s Ethan Riordan, a sixth grader at Turn of River Middle School, has taken to the New York stage in a musical adaptation of the classic folk tale “Stone Soup.” The show, set during the Revolutionary War, features original music and songs. It’s playing at the historic Players Theater, an Off- Broadway black box house in Greenwich Village.

You can catch Ethan on Oct. 22, 23, 30 and Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. For more information about the production and to order tickets, check the website http://soupinthevillage.com. A portion of every ticket purchased using the code “GLWD” will be donated to God’s Love We Deliver, which provides meals to thousands of people in the New York metro area who cannot shop or cook for themselves.

This Saturday is the 11th Annual Haitian Book & Arts Festival. Presented by the Haitian-American Professionals Association of Connecticut in conjunction with CTE and the Ferguson Library, the free program runs from 2-7 p.m. and brings together authors, film makers, performers, artists and teachers. It also offers an array of publications in English, French and Haitian Creole geared to Stamford's vibrant Haitian community. According to Josephine Fulcher-Anderson, supervisor of the Ferguson Library’s South End Branch, which hosts the event, "several hundred" visitors usually attend the yearly festival.

The Loft Artists Association Gallery is currently presenting “Monsters in the Closet,” a colorful new show of members’ works in various media. The show runs from Oct. 1-21 in the gallery at 845 Canal St., Stamford.

To exhibitor Paul G. Larson, art is a personal statement. “I make art to bear witness to the things I know, and as a means of searching for what may be. I seek original ways to express my beliefs, to help in my own discovery of what is real.” The show is open to the public and runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Begun in 1978 by three visionary artists, the gallery has grown to 52 studio and associate members in the last 30 years.
