STAMFORD, Conn. The final summer weekend in Stamford was brisk and breezy, perfect autumn-like weather to enjoy a tag sale! In one Stamford neighborhood, cars lined both sides of the street. Throughout the garage sale circuit, there was a buzz that something big and special was happening on Malvern Road. Two locals, Chris Progano and his longtime buddy Zac Maybo, had put together a multivendor yard sale that they said would be without a doubt, the largest tag sale in Stamford this year. Maybo and Progano have a dream, and the goal for the sale was to raise seed money to help them achieve their objective. Following in the repurposing footsteps of Zacs mother, Beverly Maybo, who introduced the two to the world of estate sales and collectibles, they hope to establish their own retail business in Stamford by selling antiques, refinished furniture, vintage clothing, memorabilia, tools and toys. Spending the afternoon at Stamford's annual Arts & Crafts Festival on Bedford Street, 10-year-old Ian Sterling and his mom, Karen Sterling, were captivated by Roxy and Jinx, two Shiba Inu dogs. The Asian breed, a cousin to the Akita and part of the Spitz family, is not well known. However, the small, fox-like breed easily draws attention, says owner Bill Tenca. One Shiba always turns heads, he says. A bunch gets people talking. Bill, a part-time photographer with the Fire Department, and his family, wife Thea and daughter Jess, have become so enamored of the breed that Bill founded the regional meet-up group for owners. Locally, the group has hiked the trails at Mianus River, Waveny Park, Cove Beach and Sherwood Island. Five-year-old Roxy has even had a brush with celebrity: appearing in a music video with Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame! Anyone interested in learning more about this distinctive breed can email Bill at [email protected] or check out the meet-up group at www.meetup.com/nycshibas.To submit information for this column, send an email to Juli at [email protected].
