STAMFORD, Conn. With the good wishes, prayers and solidarity of the community pouring down to Duke Medical Center, 24-year-old Rivky Deren, of Stamford, and her parents Rabbi Yisrael and Vivi Deren, are "feeling the love." While awaiting a double lung transplant in North Carolina, weekly gift boxes prepared by Jewish Women Connected at the Chabad House of Stamford flooded Rivky's hospital room.
Rivky suffers from a chronic lung ailment. Since her successful 12-hour surgery, the family has been vocal in thanking Duke Medical Center staff for their care and encouraging people to become organ donors. Rivky has made amazing progress, breathing without a ventilator and managing to walk down the hall from the ICU to the waiting room. For more information or to learn of opportunities to help, contact Leah Shemtov, director of community programming at Chabad House of Stamford, at 203-329-0033, ext. 418, or [email protected].
Move over salsa, theres a new vibrant dance style in town. Over at the Latin Dance Moves Studio on West Main Street, Ramya Gunashekar has developed Bollywood Aerobics for adults, a new form of exercise that combines the latest moves from Bollywood cinema along with an intense cardiovascular workout.
And because Bollywood music is such fun and you never know what movements are coming next you don't even realize you're exercising, Gunashekar says.
Beyond aerobics, Bharata Natyam classes are offered to girls starting at age four, teaching them all the hand gestures, meanings, and intricate footwork of the national dance of India. Boys and girls of all ages can participate Bollywood Dance classes. Ramya is offering a free class during September. Contact her at 914-479-8843 or email [email protected] to sign up.
