The Joseph W. Nunn Scholarship Foundation announced its fifth annual award winners at a dinner dance at the Italian Center. Spearheaded by Myrtle Nunn to honor the legacy of her son, who died in 2005, the organization gave out 23 scholarships and four community grants. This year, three Stamford High School students, Zachary Lyman, Christian Cavaliere, and Morgan Temple, received scholarships. Miriam Matos was awarded an Adult in the Workforce grant to continue her education and Judith Martin received funding for the Starfish Connection, an organization whose mission is to support academically talented students from low-income families to reach their potential and their dreams of attending college.
Vladimir Ducasse, a Haitian-born Stamford High School graduate and Jets offensive lineman, met with local high school and middle school students. The 6-foot-5 graduate of UMass-Amherst who wears No. 62 for New York, was in Stamford on June 10 to discuss his journey from his early years in Haiti to success as a football player in this country. San Francisco 49er Alex Joseph, Ducasses high school teammate, also addressed the group about his NFL career. Animal Embassy is celebrating its newest fuzzy arrival. Director Chris Evers said: Brought to us while still in the egg, Webster is one of the newest members of the Animal Embassy crew. He is a domestic, imprinted duck, and will be with us for a while. Animal Embassy is dedicated to fostering appreciation and respect for the natural world and the diversity of life. It provides a variety of hands-on, interactive and entertaining educational experiences. Stamfords Christopher Beadle was a winner of the Connecticut Bar Associations 2011 annual statewide James W. Cooper Fellows Essay Contest and Scholarship Award. Students were asked to compose a legislative memo exploring the pros and cons of amending Connecticuts bullying statute.
