STAMFORD, Conn. ? New Covenant House is asking for help in providing daily after-school hot meals to 175 children of Stamford working families.
Prices continue to rise and donations continue to wane. We are hoping the holiday season might bring about acts of charity that will aid this program and support the children whom we feed," Brian Jenkins, director of New Covenant House, said in a press release. The hot-meals program does not receive federal aid and is only able to function through private and business donations, the release said.
The soup kitchen is based in the lower level of the Yerwood Center and feeds the children who attend the afterschool and summer programs there. Currently it costs New Covenant House $1,068 a week for the afterschool program and $2,135 a week during the summer, and Jenkins expects prices to go up.
Each weekday, we provide them with kid-friendly, nutritious food such as pizza, chicken nuggets, hot dogs and fruit, Jenkins said in the release.
Children in the program at the Yerwood Center get help on their homework in addition to a warm meal.
"This program not only lightens my load, but it also allows us to spend quality time together as a family, Haydee Aleman, a mother of two in the program, said in the release.
"It provides my children with a healthy, balanced meal while I get job training. This is really beneficial to all of us, Natalie Diggs, who has three children at Yerwood every day, said in the release.
Anyone interested in making a monetary donations to New Covenant House should call Jenkins at 203-964-8228 or email [email protected].
