Stamford Developer Plans to Retain Boatyard

STAMFORD, Conn. — Harbor Point Development will provide a “working boatyard” at the site of the former Brewer’s Yacht Haven West in Stamford’s South End, a letter from the developer to the city’s Land Use Department says.

Harbor Point closed the boatyard in November to perform remediation work on the property, which was considered “severely contaminated,” John Freeman, executive vice president of Building and Land Technology, wrote to acting Land Use Bureau Chief Norman Cole.

The developer's plans for the boatyard had not been disclosed prior to Monday night's hearing on its plans for Harbor Point, which drew strong opposition from the Stamford community. Addressing the issue at the hearing, Freeman told the Zoning Board that Harbor Point was willing to comply with whatever stipulations the city imposes.

“We will work with you, we will work with the staff,” Freeman said during the hearing, which concerned Building and Land Technology’s proposed hotel.

Stamford’s Zoning Board voted unanimously to have the developer stop all work on the boatyard property because it violates the General Development Plan for Harbor Point. The board also decided to make the developer provide a projected timeline for receiving state permits and a plan for reestablishing a working boatyard.
