Shes bashful, but quite active. And when something especially piques this Stamford residents interest, she can resort to unusual habits.
When she gets excited she eats her bed, said Robin Stein about Kate, the 4 ½-year old Border Collie thats been living with Stein and his wife the past two years. The couple will be traveling out of the area for extended periods, and Kate now needs a new home.
Kate was acquired by the Mill River Collaborative to help disperse and control the population of Canada Geese that nest near the water on Mill River Park property. Kate has been trained as a herding dog.
Stein, who retired last week from his position as Stamfords Land Use Bureau chief, and his wife, artist Silvia Fernandez-Stein, have been Kates foster parents. Their grown daughter will care for Kate for the next few weeks, but shell soon need to relocate.
Dogs are a lot of responsibility, Stein notes, adding that Kate takes to youngsters. Shes very good with kids.
Shes sensitive, however. A new foster individual or family would have to take time to get to know her.
Shes shy, particularly around large men. We dont know whether something happened [in her past], said Stein. He adds that Kate is not a rescue dog, and that she has been spayed.
Like munching on her bed, Kate has certain habits that are part of her personality. For example, she isnt always overt about her needs.
When you let her out is a case in point, said Stein. Im used to all dogs barking when they want to come in. Shell just sit out there.
MRC pays for a walking service to take Kate out twice a day weekdays and once on Saturday. For more information, contact MRC at (203) 977-4713.
