With its school year finished, St. Luke's is taking time out to honor some of its most beloved faculty and staff members. The school gave its annual Excellence in Teaching Award to Lee Bruner. St. Luke's also named Facilities Technician John Tita its Crusader of the Year.
Bruner received the honor because of his innovative teaching methods, particularly his use of technology. He set up web-based group pages to foster student discussion. He had his students use Glogster, a web-based poster-sharing site, to publish visual projects. And he used videoconferencing to have students communicate with guest speakers. He also worked heavily with the school's Argentina Exchange Program, "making it a richer, fuller experience," according Head of School Mark Davis. He added, "He keeps his lessons fresh, up to date and stimulating while setting the bar high."
The faculty gave Tita the award because of his dedication to St. Luke's. "[He] literally makes the school run," said Davis. One example is the school's Harkness gathering centers, or oval tables where students and teachers meet and talk. Tita built the school's new tables from raw wood. "Simply put, he never says 'no,' " said Davis. "A dedicated worker, a family man and a friend to all, he's pure class."
