Gabriella Manuli, 13, isn't asking for too much in her search for a high school. "I want a school that has good academics so I can get into a good college," the eighth-grader at St. Aloysius School said. "But I want to make good friends and have a good time."
Perhaps she took a step toward finding her perfect high school Thursday. Gabriella and several of her St. Aloysius classmates attended the annual High School Night to see what the future might hold. Representatives from six area private schools talked with students and parents about their schools, including curriculum, athletics and campus environments.
Gabriella's mother, Patricia Manuli, said they would also consider public schools in Norwalk. For her part, Gabriella said she still needed to think more about where she wants to go. "It's a lot different than eighth grade, and it's to prepare you for college," she said.
St. Aloysius Principal Donald Howard said the event offers students and parents a chance to look into different high schools all in one place. They learn about the programs offered and where their graduates often attend college. The event had fewer students and schools than in previous years because of the bad weather.
Niji Taiwo, 13, said he's still mulling several schools and wants to find the best path to a good college. His parents, Patrick and Atinuhe Taiwo, want a quality education for him but also want a religious environment.
Niji didn't know what to say when hearing the words "high school," imagining the heavier course load and all that secondary education brings. Patrick Taiwo put his mind at ease, though. "One step at a time," he said.
