Michelle Carignan, a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in LaGrange says now that warmer weather is here, you can -- and should -- bring your cardio outside.
"It makes it so much more fun," she said. "I always say how lucky we are to live with the railtrail right in our backyards. You get to the point you want to stop at, and you have no choice other than to turn around and go back. Every couple of minutes on your walk, do a different exercise for a certain count or time interval. By the end of your workout and when you've gotten back to your start point, you will have done much more than you thought you could."
Carignan, a Wappingers Falls resident, said mixing up your workout is always a good idea. "You want to keep your body guessing," she said. Otherwise, youur muscles adapt, and once that happens, you don't burn as many calories." Mixing it up means forcing your muscles to do a lot of work in order to repair," she explained.
Her top pieces of advice for new clients:
- Trick Your Body. That means mixing it up and not sticking to just one routine.
- The Hardest Part is Getting There: Motivate yourself. Once you're at the gym or just beginning your workout, you kind of have no choice other than to do something, said Carignan. Walking is better than standing, standing is better than sitting.
- "Feel The Burn" and "You Got This" are two of Carignan's favorite sayings. "If you 'feel the burn,' it's kind of like instant gratification -- we all love that," she said. "And 'You got this;' sure, your mind is telling you that you can't do one more rep, or run one more mile. You can. Show your mind that you can."
