Fred Chang thinks New Canaan is wasting too much money and hes taken his message to the streets. Well, the sidewalk, anyway.
Im angry, Im frustrated, Im concerned, Im disgusted and I want something to happen, Chang said. I want increased fiscal restraint and prudent spending of our property tax dollars.
Chang, 62, spent his Wednesday morning in front of the New Canaan Post Office on the corner of Park and Cherry streets telling people how he feels about what he views as wasteful projects. Chang has been a persistent critic of the towns Long Range Planning Committee spending $175,000 to hire a consultant to work with town officials on a plan for growth and development. Now hes hoping to rally support to stop a proposed $4 million road improvement project, which may include widening the sidewalks on the south side of Main Street between Oak Street and Farm Road.
He gathered nine signatures over three hours supporting his call for a referendum to overturn a Feb. 18 Town Council bond resolution.
Alan Fleischer, 83, of Main Street, did not sign the petition, saying he needed to learn more about the issue. But he supports Changs efforts to keep people aware about whats going on with their tax money. This wakes them up, Fleischer said.
