WILTON, Conn. For nine years, the Wilton League of Women Voters has worked with Wilton Kiwanis and the Town to gather residents together in the same room with town employees and board members at Speak Up Wilton.
Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, members of the town government and many of the boards and commissions will gather at Trackside Teen Center to answer questions from the public.
We borrowed the concept from Weston actually, said Carole Young-Kleinfeld, town registrar and member of the league. I just thought it was a fabulous opportunity for the public to put names to faces of their local government.
Young-Kleinfeld recalled starting the event when the league was doing a study on changing the school start time. In the past, it has been a well-attended event, said Lori Kaine, league member and event organizer. Young-Kleinfeld said the event generally draws 60 to 70 people. Last year, she said there was a great turnout, but most of the questions were directed toward the Board of Education and its budget.
I think that a lot of the questions this year will be geared to storm response because I think there are a lot of open-ended questions still out there, Kaine said. But she said questions about underground wiring and voter redistricting may come up, as well as questons on education, which is always a topic of conversation.
Its a great opportunity for people that have questions and they dont know who to address them to or are afraid to address them, Kaine said. Questions can be asked anonymously.
Theres a lot of things that come out of it and people say, 'Oh I didn't know that,' Kaine said. Even if you dont have any questions, its still a great learning experience.
