NEW ROCHELLE, NY Sound Shore Medical Center recently announced the opening of its new Joint Solutions Program for individuals choosing hip and knee replacement surgery.
Sound Shore Medical Centers new Joint Solutions Program is built on a strong foundation of communication before, during and after, said Joint Solutions Program Coordinator and Nurse Practitioner Peggy Coll.
It starts by preparing the patient for their replacement surgery in their surgeons office. There, they receive a Joint Solutions Patient Guidebook that gives them step-by-step preparation about what to expect and what is expected. They also receive an invitation to attend a pre-operative class, where communication continues," Coll said. "While an inpatient, they enjoy a daily newsletter. Before discharge, the patient attends a discharge class to prepare for life after joint replacement. In addition, they are invited to attend a quarterly reunion to talk about their experience and their improved quality of life.
Joint replacement patient Vincent Fodero of New Rochelle is very pleased and impressed with the new program.
Joint Solutions at Sound Shore Medical Center is a well-oiled machine, said Fodero. Everything is very efficient 1, 2, 3. From my doctors office to admitting from the pre-op class to being a patient everything is spelled out; theres no mystery about what to expect and whats happening every step of the way.
The program provides patients with a hospital experience that celebrates wellness and recovery in a dedicated unit, according to information from the center.
The program informs patients about the joint-replacement process. It also provides them with expert surgeons, the support of specially trained staffers who work exclusively with joint-replacement patients and a dedicated recovery suite, the center said.
The program strives to provide each elective-surgery patient an extraordinary experience before, during and after their stay in the Advanced Orthopedics Suite so patients can get the knowledge, care and tools needed for an easy transition from the hospital to home.
Before surgery, patients attend a pre-operative class with a family member or friend who will act as a coach; information about what to expect from beginning to end is shared with them.
Patients are better prepared for the recovery process with the knowledge they gain through the classes, and a coach who helps encourage and motivate them on their road to recovery," the center said.
Sound Shore Medical Center opened its Advanced Orthopedics Suite last year to provide a dedicated environment for individuals choosing joint replacement. Patients are encouraged to wear street clothes and participate in group activities, including the popular putting tournament that makes rehabilitation fun. While their coaches are championing their recovery, joint replacement patients also encourage and support each other, also serving as a motivator so they can get back on their feet.
The program provides patients with 24/7 physician coverage, a state-of-the-art patient monitoring system, hotel-style private rooms with upscale bathrooms and wood floors; flat-screen televisions with cable and web access.
The suite also features a family-friendly area that includes a food station, and en-suite rehabilitation room to accelerate preparation for discharge.
