A program’s certification by the association is a coveted distinction and one the hospital has maintained since January 1995, hospital officials said. The recognition assures the public that Sound Shore Medical Center has met national standards and the program provides health-care professionals with expertise in providing state-of-the-art information about diabetes management, the hospital said.

With the support of Sound Shore Medical Center’s health-care team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, patients now can assume a major part of the responsibility of their own diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and a reduction in some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes are prevented through self-management education, the hospital said.

In addition to self-management, the program staff provides screening and education through community outreach. It participates in health fairs, sponsor a support group, Sweet Talk, and offers educational seminars, as well as consultation and resources to hospital nursing staff.

Sound Shore Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program represents the cornerstone of its newly opened Jacee Lynn Cappelli Diabetes Center, featuring the Elaine and Melvin Merians Education and Conference Center, the hospital said. This diabetes center – treating and educating individuals with juvenile and adult diabetes all under one roof – is the only one in Westchester County.
