SOMERS, N.Y. - Superintendent Mary Beth Murphy advised residents that the storm outages may continue for several days and Somers Schools will be closed Monday as a result.
Murphy said she has spoken to NYSEG and expects to have another conference call at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. NYSEG has explained that it is working from the largest power stations downward through the substations and into the neighborhoods. The primary focus is to get power to the critical areas, such as nursing homes, and to maintain power to those who already have it.
Murphy is in contact with Westchester County's reverse 911 system, which will send automated messages to homeowners. Because of construction in the Heritage Hills parking lot, the Somers Middle School will be used as a shelter for anyone in need. It will open at 5 p.m. Sunday. and those going are reminded to bring medications and food. There are no cooking facilities available at the school and no pets are allowed.
Schools will be closed Monday because of the storm. It has not been announced yet whether activities scheduled for Monday will be rescheduled.
