SOMERS, N.Y. – Here is some up-to-the-minute information about emergency procedures in Somers as Hurricane Sandy heads for the Northeast:

Town of Somers

  • Watch the banner headline running across the top of the Somers Town website for other information about emergency plans.
  • The Heritage Hills Activity Center will act as a shelter in case of power outages. Cots, toiletries, pillows and blankets will be provided.
  • Showers will be available at the New York Sports Club at 80 Route 6 in Baldwin Place.
  • Animals will be sheltered at the Goldens Bridge Veterinary Center at 15 Anderson Lane in Goldens Bridge. The phone number is 914-232-8800. 
  • If NYSEG delivers dry ice, it will be distributed at Van Tassell Park on Route 139, Somers.
  • If the need for potable water arises, it will be distributed at the Amawalk Fire House at 1 Liberty Way, and the Granite Springs Fire House at 145 Tomahawk St.
  • Local businesses selling generators include A-AAMP Electric at 914-621-4482 and The Tool Nut at 877-866-5688.
  • Businesses with generators that will accommodate residents in case of power failure include Il Forno at 914-277-7575 and Best Plumbing at 914-232-2020. Call ahead to check.

NYSEG

  • Stay away from downed power lines. To report downed power lines or other hazardous conditions, call 800-572-1131.
  • For electricity emergencies and to report power interruptions, call 800-572-1131.
  • Operate emergency generators only according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never run them indoors or in a garage. Operate only outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from windows and doors.
  • If you use electrically powered life-sustaining equipment call 800-572-1111 to register in the critical customer program.
  • Keep flashlights handy. Keep extra batteries on hand for all battery-operated equipment.
  • Remember to fully charge all cell phones, iPads, iPods and other electronic equipment before the storm hits.
  • Turn off major appliances to avoid overloading when power returns.
  • Stay out of flooded basements under an electrician can be summoned.
