SOMERS, N.Y. - As school curricula get trimmed in accordance with budget cutbacks, the Somers Education Foundation spends its time and money trying to fill in the gaps.
The foundation began its work 17 years ago. In that time, it has raised around $850,000, all of it designated to enrich the learning experiences of Somers students.
We try to impact as many students as possible, said Vice President Glenn Hintze. We offer a huge range of grants, anything from marching band equipment to iPads for the eighth grade.
One of our biggest grants this year provided ten Smart Boards for the schools, Hintze said. They cost between $3,000 and $4,000 each but they have a real impact on learning. A Smart Board is the new chalkboard. Its a touch-screen device. We were pioneers in getting them.
The foundation also gave a $40,540 grant to the school district to pay for Power Libraries, technology-based learning centers equipped with iPads, flat screens, wireless connections, good lighting and comfortable seating.
At the less technical end of the spectrum, are programs such as a presentation by Rachels Challenge, an organization devoted to combating bullying. Teenager Rachel Scott was the first person killed at the 1999 Columbine tragedy.
We also have an authors day, Hintze said, and we fund high school trips and all kinds of technology. We award grants for ideas that are creative and have the greatest outreach to the most kids.
To support all of this generosity, the foundation has six signature fundraisers each year, among them a golf outing, a wine tasting, and a student variety show.
The next event will be the family-oriented Carnival Night in the Somers High School gym from 6-9 p.m. March 30. There will be games, prizes, ice cream, pizza, music and fun for all. Admission is $10 for children (games included) and $5 for adults and seniors.
On April 28, The Parent Prom at Armonks Brynwood Country Club will honor Somers residents Roy Arnesen, Nick and Missy Vece and Cesar and Judi Callan for their tireless ongoing support to the community. Tickets are $100 per person, $85 for teachers. For more information contact [email protected].
