SOMERS, N.Y. Somers annual Independence Day celebration is just two weeks away.
The date is Saturday, June 30, the place is Reis Park and the festivities get under way at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies will include a tribute to the Girl Scouts of America, which is observing its 100th anniversary this year.
The days activities include the Somers Family Challenge, the traditional Lions Club barbecue, community group displays, SYSO baseball and softball games, tours of the Wright-Reis Homestead, the Lions Car Raffle, a number of childrens games, a water slide, a variety show and the third annual Lynn Adams Memorial 5K Run/1-Mile Walk and Talk-a-thon.
Proceeds from the Run/Walk-a-thon will go to the Lynn Adams Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund, in honor of the community leader who lost her battle to cancer in 2008. New this year is the Somers Family Challenge. Gather your family and friends or neighbors into teams of 10 to 12 and compete in a series of contests relay races, tug-o-war, obstacle courses, Angry Birds to earn points and win medals. Entertainment will be provided by Ed Mullaney, Six Stories Told, The Merry Brothers of Funk, Gandhis Revenge and Andrea and the Armenian Rug Riders.
The climax is at about 9 p.m., with the traditional Fireworks Spectacular. Last year the cost of the fireworks was covered by community donations. The overall goal is $10,000. So far this year, $6,385 has been raised.
There is still time to contribute to the fireworks fund. Checks should be made out to the Town of Somers with a notation stating, Fireworks Fund, and can be dropped off or mailed to the Town House at 335 Route 202, Somers, NY 10589. All contributions will be acknowledged at the event.
