On Wednesday, April 29, into Thursday, April 30, a widespread round of steady rain is forecast across the northern mid-Atlantic and New England, the National Weather Service says.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys noted, "The rain that is forecast to fall in the mid- to late-week period for the Northeast and New England is going to be a good, soaking rain for many. This will be beneficial in the short term, as much of the area could measure between a half inch and one inch of rain."
Following the rain, cooler air will settle into the region, bringing temperatures 5-15 degrees below historical averages.
"Temperature-wise, the air mass arriving starting later this week in the Northeast is more typical of late March and early April," Roys noted. "The chill could have staying power and last into the first full week of May."
This cooler pattern could result in another significant frost or freeze event, particularly in parts of Michigan and interior western New York, where the growing season has just begun.
Late-season snow is also possible in the mountains of northern New England and the Adirondacks, potentially disrupting outdoor plans, agriculture, and early-season planting.
Residents in the Northeast should prepare for a damp, chilly end to April and start to May.
