Snow May Cause Stamford Flooding

The deluge of snow Stamford has received this winter may block storm drains and catch basins and lead to flooding. The city is asking residents to clear these areas, as well as flat, elevated roofs where snow and ice might accumulate.

“Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to add additional accumulations and weight to the snowpack that already exists on the ground, decks and roofs,” says Bobby Valentine, head of the Office of Public Safety, Health and Welfare. “Residents should take notice of any changes to conditions, particularly on flat roofs and decks.”

Meanwhile, the snow emergency declared by Mayor Michael Pavia last week remains in effect. That means all vehicles should be removed from designated city snow routes. Free parking is available in city parking garages.

“Conditions affecting snow removal are becoming extreme with streets and narrowed lanes,” Pavia says. “We ask our residents to be patient as our road crews, already pushed to the maximum, work as diligently as possible to clear the roadways by taking advantage of the municipal parking lots free-parking until the snow emergency is lifted.”

Today’s morning snowfall is expected to become a “wintery mix” of snow, freezing rain and sleet after noon, according to the National Weather Service. With high temperatures below the freezing point, it will make for extremely hazardous conditions. Similar weather is expected Wednesday.

Stamford schools have early dismissal today, and the city has closed the Mygatt Recycling Center because of weather conditions.
